Salt-Free Whole House Filtration

Salt-Free Whole House Filtration

When it comes to treatment of hard water in your home, we want you to know that you have options. A traditional water softener is generally the default choice because of the many problems it addresses. However, there are other systems available that utilize various media and technologies to provide solutions by alternative methods. It’s important, however, that you are aware of the benefits and limitations of these products.

Our salt-free water conditioning solutions provide
whole house contaminant protection for your family

Experience clean, filtered water from every faucet and shower head in your home. These systems trap and remove chemical contaminants and require virtually zero maintenance.

and toxic chemical reduction for your skin

Chlorine and chloramines are added into municipal water pipes as chemical disinfectants. When released from shower heads, these substances become vaporized and can easily be absorbed by your skin, raising your body’s levels of toxicity. With our high quality salt-free systems, these impurities and many more are removed or reduced, leaving you and your water fresh and clean.

  • Water Filtration Basics

Before one can appreciate the residential water treatment process and the water quality improvements that are available, one must first be aware of the removal methods and the possible contaminants involved. As a starting point, we can loosely define four categories of water contaminants. These are sediment, hardness minerals, chloramines/volatile organic chemicals and drinking water grade contaminants.

  • Category 1- Dirt and Sediment

The first and easiest group to identify and remove is dirt and sediment. These are relatively large inclusions that are inadvertently introduced into or can break loose from the inside walls of the many miles of municipal pipes that deliver water to your home. Included in this group are dirt, sand and small bits of rust and corrosion. These are easily removed with a sediment pre-filter unit or carbon filter.

The next level of objectionable matter is scale-producing hard water minerals such as calcium and magnesium. These minerals are most destructive, because they can attach to pipes and plumbing fixtures, causing reduced water flow and corrosion that can degrade the host metal. The resultant scale build-up can then become a breeding ground for bacteria. This same scale builds up inside water-using appliances like water heaters, dishwashers and coffee makers, reducing the efficiency of their heating elements and potentially clogging internal piping and orifices.

Ironically, as damaging as these two minerals can be to pipes and appliances, they are generally recognized as beneficial to the human diet. Fortunately, there are options to either remove or retain these minerals while still limiting scale build-up … please read on.

In order to reduce hardness minerals in your home water supply, you can choose a traditional water softener that completely removes the minerals through a process called ion exchange, or you could choose a salt-free system that utilizes a different method. Only water that has had hardness minerals removed via a conventional water softener will provide benefits such as “silky” feeling skin, protection for fabrics and apparel, less soap consumption and water spot reduction. In contrast, most salt-free scale reduction products don’t remove the minerals but temporarily hold them in suspension, which prevents them from attaching to surfaces for as long as they are under pressure in your plumbing system. That makes these products excellent for protecting pipes, plumbing and appliances like water heaters. Keeping scale at bay can lead to considerable cost savings due to extended life cycles of these items.

Only water that has had hardness minerals removed via a conventional water softener will provide benefits such as “silky” feeling skin, protection for fabrics and apparel, less soap consumption and water spot reduction.
However, once the treated water is released to atmosphere at faucets and shower heads, the protection ends. In other words, these same hardness minerals are now free to attach to your skin and hair, dishes, laundry and external faucet and shower head surfaces. Looking on the brighter side, these nutritionally beneficial calcium and magnesium minerals are now available for consumption in your drinking water, which is equally important to some of our clients.

Accordingly, if your priorities are calcium and magnesium consumption, electricity savings due to non-fouled appliances operating at peak efficiency, and a clean running plumbing and piping system free from corrosion and scale build-up, then no water softener is necessary and a scale reduction system is the perfect solution.

To this customer we would offer our ScaleNet ® salt-free system. ScaleNet ® ’s patented technology prevents scale from attaching to pipes and appliances in all wet (pressurized) parts of your home’s plumbing. Unlike traditional water softeners, this system leaves certain nutritional minerals like calcium and magnesium available for consumption. And ScaleNet ® utilizes no salt, chemicals or on-going consumables and requires virtually no routine maintenance. In addition, placing a ScaleNet ® unit into service in a plumbing system with existing scale accumulation has been proven to result in significant reduction in such scale residue over time.

The ScaleNet ® water treatment system is considered environmentally friendly due to the fact that it requires no electricity. However, we generally install it alongside our backwashing catalytic carbon system because the two units perfectly complement each other for whole house water filtration.

The ScaleNet ® system tank media can be flushed and replaced when necessary. Generally, the media should be changed every 2-5 years, depending upon the hardness of your water and your family’s usage requirements.

  • Nope! I need a Water Softener

In the alternative, if you feel that you get adequate nutrition from your daily diet and/or mineral supplements and traditional water softener benefits sound pretty appealing, then you should probably consider a water softener. We have premium, proven and trouble-free models available for purchase or monthly rental. We also provide our soft water tank exchange service in many communities throughout our service area. You can read more about these products on our Soft Water for your Home page.

  • Category 3- Chloramines and volatile organic chemicals (VOCs)

Chloramines have nearly replaced chlorine as the disinfectant of choice utilized by municipal water providers. Chloramines are a mixture of chlorine and ammonia. Unlike chlorine, which dissipates fairly quickly when exposed to air, chloramines have characteristics that allow them to remain in the water longer and can have a negative impact on your water’s taste and odor.

One of the most accepted methods to reduce chloramines and VOCs in your water is the installation of a carbon filter. Carbon filters in general will remove over 80 chemicals from water and are known to reduce another 50+ additional chemicals. This is achieved through a mechanism known as adsorption, a chemical process whereby contaminant particles adhere to and are trapped within the carbon media. While there are many variations of carbon filters, from activated to granulated to coconut, we have found the most effective and reliable to be catalytic carbon.

Our whole house automatic carbon filter systems contain high-grade catalytic carbon for the removal of bad tastes and odors, chlorine, chloramines and organic chemicals, as well as particulate matter like dirt, sand and sediment. Enjoy clean, great tasting and odor free water from every faucet, shower head and connected appliance in your home. And unlike traditional water softeners, this system leaves in certain nutritional minerals like calcium and magnesium. These long lasting and maintenance free filters can be used as a stand alone product, or paired with a ScaleNet ® system or a conventional water softener to provide optimal whole house water treatment.

Our corrosion-proof pressure tanks are constructed of fiberglass for durability and long life. The premium control valve automatically regulates backwash cycles and is fully adjustable for maximum flexibility. The system can be configured with other media to meet specific water contamination problems.

  • Category 4- Drinking water grade contaminants

This final group of water impurities includes some dangerous and debilitating substances that we hope are not present in your water but we know that they can be. These include asbestos, industrial chemicals, nuclear materials, dissolved solids, heavy metals, farming and livestock pesticides, viruses, cysts and parasites such as cryptosporidium.  While some of these contaminants may be intercepted by your whole house catalytic carbon filter, we recommend a reverse osmosis drinking water system for use as your family’s primary drinking water source. Our Pacific Summit R.O. system utilizes a series of pre and post filters as well as a premium, ultra-efficient selective membrane which filters down to submicron level particles, reducing up to 99% of these contaminants, for nearly unlimited, safe and great tasting drinking water.
